Three Things a Preacher Needs |
Three Things a Preacher Needs
The first things which may come to mind are food, clothing and shelter. Although these are essential, let's look at three other things which I believe every preacher needs. These are prayer, patience and proof.
1. Every preacher needs prayer. Certainly the preacher should lead a life of prayer, as should we all, but I'm referring to his need of prayers from his church family. The awesome responsibility that comes with the preacher's job is certainly deserving of prayer. I'm sure that no one will appreciate your prayers more than your preacher. Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica, "Brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you" (II Thessalonians 3:1).
2. Every preacher needs patience. Certainly patience is needed in his own life, as it is with us all, but I'm referring to his need of patience from his church family. The preacher will make mistakes as we all do. Be ready to assist him patiently and give him the opportunity to make improvement. Paul wrote, "Be patient toward all men" (I Thessalonians 5: 14).
3. Every preacher needs proof. You've heard the term, "proofreader", meaning one who checks for accuracy in a body of work. Preachers need proofreaders and proof listeners. Few jobs require more output of words, on a regular basis, both in oral and written formats. The sincere preacher will be striving to accurately communicate God's will from the Holy Bible. I'm sure that every preacher appreciates constructive correction, due to the serious nature of their work. In Acts 17: 11 we read about the noble Bereans who "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." I urge you to "proof" the words of every preacher for accuracy, comparing them to the true standard of the scriptures. May we all use the Bible as our only guide.
I gladly welcome your comments or questions and offer you my assistance in your own personal study of God's Holy Word.
